Contact tags and why you need to use them

Tag are extremely important and the main way you will be able to segment and find the right people on your list when you need to.  You can use automations in order to automatically add a tag to a contact when they purchase a product, sign up for a freebie or book an appointment with you.

We'll quickly walk through adding a tag to a contact when an appointment is booked, but the same process applies for any type of automation.

How to Add Tags to Contacts in ActiveCampaign

This guide will show you how to add tags to contacts in ActiveCampaign. Tags are a way to categorize your contacts based on their actions, such as signing up for a freebie or booking a call.

Adding a Tag in an Automation

  1. Go to Automations.

  2. Find the automation you want to edit (e.g., Discovery Call booking).

  3. Click on the automation to open it.

  4. In the automation workflow, find the place where you want to add the tag. It's typically at the beginning.

  5. Click the "+" button and search for "Add Contact Tag".

  6. In the Tag field, type the name of the tag you want to create (e.g., "Discovery Call"). Tip: Use consistent naming conventions for your tags (e.g., "call-booking-discovery-call").

  7. Click Save to save the automation.

Turning on the Automation and Testing

  1. Make sure the automation is Published (green switch).

  2. Go to Calendars > Calendar Settings.

  3. Find the relevant calendar (e.g., the one with your Zoom link).

  4. Copy the scheduling link.

  5. Go back to Contacts.

  6. Create a new contact (or use an existing one).

  7. Schedule a meeting using the copied link.

  8. Refresh the contact. The newly created tag should now be visible in the contact information.

Benefits of Using Tags

  • Filter Contacts: Easily find specific groups of contacts based on their tags (e.g., people who booked a call).

  • Segmentation: Create targeted email campaigns or automations for specific groups.

Additional Notes

  • You can edit existing tags by going to Settings > Tags.

  • You can delete unused tags in bulk.
